Sea Level Change

Hydrological and Oceanic Processes

The long-term rise or fall of global or regional mean sea level, driven over recent decades chiefly by the thermal expansion of warming ocean water and the addition of meltwater from glaciers and ice sheets, alongside regional factors such as land subsidence or glacial isostatic rebound. Sea level change reshapes coastlines gradually but is also a key driver of increasing coastal flood risk.

Wikimedia FoundationIntroduction
Quote, Introduction
The sea level has generally been rising since the end of the Last Glacial Maximum, which was around 20,000 years ago. Between 1901 and 2018, the global average sea level rose by 15-25 cm (6-10 in), with an increase of 2.3 mm (0.091 in) per year since the 1970s.

Much of these shelves were exposed by drops in sea level during glacial periods.

Land Bridge (Wikipedia)

Quote, Shaped: Land Bridge, Lead
A land bridge can be created by marine regression, in which sea levels fall, exposing shallow, previously submerged sections of continental shelf; or when new land is created by plate tectonics; or occasionally when the sea floor rises due to post-glacial rebound after an ice age.

The bay was formed starting about 10,000 years ago when rising sea levels at the end of the last ice age flooded the Susquehanna River valley.

Quote, Shaped: Yellow Sea, Lead and sections
The sea is a flooded section of continental shelf that formed after the last glacial period (some 10,000 years ago) as sea levels rose 120 m (390 ft) to their current levels.

Tidewater Region (Wikipedia)

Quote, Shaped: Tidewater, Lead and sections
The Tidewater region developed when sea levels rose after ice sheets melted at the end of the last ice age, resulting in the flooding of river valleys in the coastal plain and the Chesapeake lowland which created the Chesapeake Bay.

Quote, Shaped: San Francisco Bay, Formation statement for target 287776
San Francisco Bay has been filled and emptied of sea water many times during the Pleistocene in accordance with sea level changes caused by glacial advances and retreats.

Quote, Shaped: Delaware Bay, Formation statement for target 287776
Delaware Bay is the ria of the Delaware River, i.e. the drowned river valley that had been the river’s alluvial plain in periods of lower sea level during the Quaternary glaciation.

The coast has been inundated over time, with sea levels having risen from a minimum of 115-120 m (377-394 ft) lower than today at the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) to its current level at 4,000 years BP.

The underlying mechanism was first thought to be plate tectonics, but by 1930 changes in the ice mass balance which led to global sea-level fluctuations were viewed as the cause of the Bering land bridge.
