Texas is the second-most populous and second-largest U.S. state, occupying the south-central United States along the Gulf of Mexico and the Mexican border. It entered the Union in 1845 as the 28th state, following nine years as the independent Republic of Texas; its capital is Austin and its largest city is Houston.
