Xinjiang, officially the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, is an autonomous region in the far northwest of China at the crossroads of Central and East Asia, and is the largest province-level division of China by area. Spanning more than 1.6 million square kilometers and home to about 25 million people, it borders Afghanistan, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Pakistan, Russia and Tajikistan, with the rugged Karakoram, Kunlun and Tian Shan ranges occupying much of its borders; the best known route of the historic Silk Road ran through the territory. The Aksai Chin and Trans-Karakoram Tract areas along its southwestern border are administered by China but claimed by India.
