Equatorial Guinea is a country on the west coast of Central Africa, comprising the mainland region of Rio Muni, bordered by Cameroon and Gabon, together with island territories in the Gulf of Guinea including Bioko and Annobon. It gained independence from Spain on 12 October 1968. It is a unitary presidential republic under an authoritarian hereditary government. Its capital, since January 2026, is Ciudad de la Paz, a planned city formerly known as Oyala; Malabo, on Bioko island, was the capital before the move and remains the country's largest city.
