FAQs

Why is the capital of Myanmar Naypyidaw and not Yangon?

The government began moving its administrative center in 2005 and proclaimed Naypyidaw the capital in 2006.

Yangon, then called Rangoon, was the capital from 1948 to 2006. In 2005 the government began to shift its administrative center, first to Pyinmana and then to Naypyidaw, a newly constructed city near Pyinmana. Naypyidaw was proclaimed the capital of Myanmar in 2006.
