Virginia, officially the Commonwealth of Virginia, lies in the Southeastern and Mid-Atlantic United States between the Atlantic coast and the Appalachian Mountains. It joined the Union as the 10th state in 1788; its capital is Richmond and its largest city is Virginia Beach.
