Tanzania is an East African country bordering Kenya and Uganda to the north, Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west, Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique to the south, and the Indian Ocean to the east. It contains Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa, and three of the African Great Lakes lie partly within its borders: Victoria, Tanganyika and Malawi. The mainland was administered as German East Africa and later as British-ruled Tanganyika, gaining independence in 1961; it united with Zanzibar in 1964 to form the modern United Republic of Tanzania.
