The Caribbean is the region of the western Atlantic comprising the Caribbean Sea and its island arc, the Greater and Lesser Antilles and the Bahamas, stretching from Cuba and Jamaica in the northwest to Trinidad off the Venezuelan coast in the southeast. Colonized in overlapping waves by Spain, Britain, France, and the Netherlands, its islands remain linguistically and politically fragmented even as a shared plantation history and creole cultures tie them together.
