Africa

The band of Africa north of the Sahara, along the Mediterranean coast from Morocco to Egypt, historically and culturally tied to the Arab and Berber worlds and, through the Mediterranean, to Southern Europe and the Middle East. Its western portion, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Mauritania, is often distinguished as the Maghreb, a narrower cultural and linguistic grouping than North Africa as a whole.

FAQs

Which countries does the United Nations place in Northern Africa?

The UN lists Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Sudan, Tunisia and Western Sahara.

The United Nations geographic classification known as M49 groups seven countries and territories in its Northern Africa subregion: Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Sudan, Tunisia and Western Sahara. This is a statistical grouping, so it is not identical to the cultural idea of North Africa as the Mediterranean coast from Morocco to Egypt, and it includes Sudan.
