Punjab is a state in northwestern India, part of the larger Punjab region of the Indian subcontinent, bordered by Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan and Jammu and Kashmir, and by the identically named Pakistani province of Punjab to its west. Chandigarh serves as a shared capital city for Punjab and neighboring Haryana. With more than 27 million people it is India's sixteenth largest state by population, and Punjabi, written in the Gurmukhi script, is its official and majority language, with Sikhs and Hindus forming the two largest religious communities.
