Latvia is a country in Northern Europe on the eastern shore of the Baltic Sea, bordered by Estonia to the north, Russia to the east, Belarus to the southeast, and Lithuania to the south, with a maritime boundary shared with Sweden. It declared independence from Germany and Russia on 18 November 1918; after Soviet occupation from 1940, its independence was restored on 21 August 1991. It is a unitary parliamentary republic. Its capital is Riga.
