Fluvial Erosion

Geomorphology

The wearing away of rock and sediment by moving river and stream water, the dominant process carving valleys, canyons and channel networks across the world's land surface. It operates through hydraulic action, abrasion by transported sediment, and the dissolution of soluble rock, with its rate governed chiefly by water velocity and the sediment load a channel carries.

Quote, Wikipedia: Erosion, Rivers and streams section
Valley or stream erosion occurs with continued water flow along a linear feature. The erosion is both downward, deepening the valley, and headward, extending the valley into the hillside, creating head cuts and steep banks.
