Switzerland is a landlocked country at the intersection of Central, Western and Southern Europe. Bern serves as its de facto capital, since the constitution names none officially. The Federal Charter of 1291 is considered the founding document of the original confederacy, and the modern federal state took its present form with the 1848 Swiss Federal Constitution.
