Regions of the African continent under the UN M49 geoscheme: Northern Africa and the Sub-Saharan subregions of Eastern, Middle, Southern and Western Africa, plus the atlas own physiographic and cultural clusters that sit within the continent but cross those subregion lines, such as the Sahel band and the Horn of Africa. Belongs here: any supra-national grouping whose member countries are wholly within Africa. Does not belong here: a single African country, held as its own country entity, or a region that spans Africa and another continent, such as the Mediterranean rim, held under Transregional and Maritime Regions instead.
