Protected Areas Under Many Names, From Wilsons Promontory in 1898 to Kosterhavet in 2009
A protected area can be a national park, a wildlife refuge, a biosphere reserve, a provincial park or a private preserve, and each name carries a different idea of what is being kept and who keeps it. This path runs through twelve such places on every inhabited continent, in the order each was first set aside or opened, so the changing ideas behind the labels show up in sequence.
