Atlas Trail
Twelve New Zealand Cities and Towns from Whangarei to Invercargill
This trail runs down New Zealand from the northernmost city of the North Island to the southernmost city of the country, pausing at harbours, river towns, a wine and farming coast, the Wellington suburbs and the Southern Alps resort of Queenstown, so each stop shows a different reason a New Zealand settlement was founded and has lasted.

Gisborne lies on the east coast where the Waimata, Taruheru and Turanganui rivers meet. Cook made his first New Zealand landing nearby in 1769, and the settlement known as Turanga was renamed in 1870 for colonial secretary William Gisborne to avoid confusion with Tauranga.
