Northern Europe is a subregion of Europe whose boundary shifts with the classification used. The United Nations geoscheme's broad version groups Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Sweden and the United Kingdom together with several small dependent territories, while the CIA World Factbook narrows the term to just Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, and the European Union's EuroVoc classification instead places the United Kingdom and Ireland in Western Europe. Every version keeps the Nordic countries at its core, and most also add the three Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
