United Kingdom

Also Known As United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
Northern Europe

The United Kingdom occupies most of the British Isles off the northwest coast of continental Europe, comprising Great Britain, England, Scotland and Wales, together with Northern Ireland on the island of Ireland. The 1707 Acts of Union joined the Kingdoms of England and Scotland into the Kingdom of Great Britain; a further Act of Union in 1801 joined Great Britain with the Kingdom of Ireland to form the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Most of Ireland left the union after the Irish War of Independence, and the 1922 settlement fixed the present territorial form, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Its capital, London, sits on the River Thames in southeastern England.

Three Unions

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

The United Kingdom this atlas records today is the product of three separate acts of union, each changing what the word Britain actually meant. The first, in 1707, joined the once-independent Kingdoms of England and Scotland, which had shared a monarch since 1603 but kept separate parliaments until the Acts of Union dissolved both and created a single Parliament of Great Britain at Westminster. The second, in 1801, joined that Kingdom of Great Britain with the Kingdom of Ireland, forming the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, a state that governed the whole of the British Isles as a single political unit for over a century. The third came in 1922, not an addition but a subtraction: after the Irish War of Independence, the Anglo-Irish Treaty let the southern twenty-six counties leave as the Irish Free State, while six northern counties remained inside the union as Northern Ireland, fixing the territory in its present form. The state kept the name United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland for five more years afterward; only the Royal and Parliamentary Titles Act, receiving royal assent on 12 April 1927, renamed it the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. This atlas dates the United Kingdom's own founding to 1801, the year the name itself was first used for a single state, while carrying the 1707 union, the 1922 partition and the 1927 renaming in the same fact rather than picking one to represent all three.

Four Nations, One State

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are each, in ordinary usage, called a country, and the United Kingdom is the single sovereign state that contains all four of them at once, a structure that confuses almost everyone who did not grow up inside it. England has no devolved parliament of its own, governed directly from Westminster; Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland each have their own devolved legislature, with varying powers over health, education and other domestic policy, won gradually since the late 1990s rather than granted at the country's 1801 or 1922 founding. A resident of Cardiff or Edinburgh genuinely has two governments, a devolved one and the UK one in London, answerable for different things, which is part of why questions of independence, Scottish most prominently, keep recurring inside a union old enough that most of its citizens have never known anything else. London sits at the center of all of it: the seat of the UK Parliament and the Crown, but not, formally, the seat of an English parliament that does not exist.

FAQs

When did England and Scotland formally become one kingdom?

England and Scotland united as Great Britain on 1 May 1707.

The Acts of Union, passed by the English and Scottish Parliaments in 1707, created a united kingdom called Great Britain on 1 May of that year. The UK Parliament met for the first time in October 1707. Ireland joined this union later, in 1801.
