Nigeria is a country in West Africa, lying between the Sahel to the north and the Gulf of Guinea in the Atlantic Ocean to the south. It borders Niger to the north, Chad to the northeast, Cameroon to the east, and Benin to the west. Nigeria gained independence from the United Kingdom on 1 October 1960. Its capital is Abuja.
