FAQs

When did Germany join the United Nations, and what happened to its membership at reunification?

Both German states joined the United Nations on 18 September 1973, and they became one member when they united on 3 October 1990.

The Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic were both admitted to membership in the United Nations on 18 September 1973, as two separate states. When the German Democratic Republic acceded to the Federal Republic of Germany, effective 3 October 1990, the two German states united to form one sovereign state, so Germany continues as a single member today.
