China

Also Known As People's Republic of China
Eastern Asia

China occupies nearly the entire East Asian landmass, an area approaching the whole of Europe and about one-fourteenth of Earth's land surface. With more than four thousand years of recorded history, it is among the few countries that also flourished economically and culturally in the earliest stages of world civilization; the Shang dynasty, from around the seventeenth century BCE, is the first for which definite historical material survives, followed by the unifying Qin and the long Han dynasty from 206 BCE. The present People's Republic was proclaimed in 1949. Its capital, Beijing, already described on this atlas as the country's cultural, economic and communications center, was chosen as the capital of the People's Republic in 1949.

The present People Republic of China was proclaimed in 1949, per this atlas's present-day-state scope rule (the same convention this atlas already applied to Russia). This is the founding of the CURRENT state, not a claim about when Chinese civilization or statehood itself began, which historians trace continuously back through the Han (206 BCE), Qin and Shang (c. 17th century BCE) dynasties over four thousand years of recorded history.

FAQs

Does China have more than one time zone?

China keeps one official time everywhere.

No. The official time in Beijing is the official time for all of China, so the whole country keeps a single standard time. This is the case even though China spans five time zones geographically.
