United States

Also Known As United States of America
Northern America

The United States occupies the middle latitudes of North America between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, together with Alaska at the continent's own northwestern extreme and the island state of Hawaii in the mid-Pacific. Thirteen British colonies declared independence on July 4, 1776, and the present federal Constitution, ratified in 1789, established the government structure that still holds. It is the fourth largest country in the world by area, after Russia, Canada and China, and emerged as a world power in the twentieth century, one of the preeminent powers since the Second World War. Its capital, Washington, is coextensive with the District of Columbia, a federal capital region created in 1790.
